On March 25th 2020, a daily nationwide curfew from 7pm to 5am was announced in Kenya as an attempt to halt the coronavirus spread. These measures came into effect two days after President Kenyatta announced it.

Immediately the curfew was introduced, many pregnant women across the nation were plagued with various questions.

🤷🏽‍♀ How would this new measure affect their access to reproductive health services?

🤰🏽 What would happen if the harsh pains of labour or a life-threatening complication chose to ravage their body in the middle of the night?

This is a crippling reality which explains just one of the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted reproductive health.

In a bid to make sense of the situation and understand what is currently being done as well as what still needs to be done, we have an amazing line up of reproductive health experts to help us explore this important topic.

1. Our first legendary speaker is Prof Joseph Gatheru Karanja, who became a board certified specialist obstetrician and gynecologist in 1982 and a Foundation Fellow of ECSACOG – FCOG (ECSA) in 2017.

He has had extensive training and experience in reproductive health practice and advocacy, training, development of training materials, and research on abortion, maternal health and female genital mutilation.

In addition, he teaches obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Nairobi, School of Medicine and is the current Board Chair for the Reproductive Health Network Kenya (RHNK).

2. Our second distinguished speaker is none other than Dr. Simon M. Kigondu , a stellar consultant obstetrician gynecologist.

Currently he is the Secretary General of the Kenya Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society.

As an Obstetrician Gynecologist he worked for five years at Isiolo District Hospital, where he also doubled up as the Medical Superintendent and the District Medical Services Officer (DMSO) Isiolo Zone covering 8 hospitals. He is currently a gynecologist at Murang’a County Referral Hospital.

🏽‍⚕He is also the CEO and partner gynecologist of Hercules Healthcare, a medical specialist group practice based at KMA Centre and has been active in private practice of obstetrics and gynecology.

We truly look forward to having an informative, thought-provoking and interactive session whereby we will learn more about the impact of COVID-19 on reproductive health.
